Engineering physics

Hi I am YASH BHUSARE , Engineering Physics student from IIT-M.In this blog I my going to tell you about the branch Engineering Physics and what you can expect from it. Although it covers many things about branch , but whatever I am going to write will be true for IIT-M . But it is worth of reading if you are planning for engineering physics .

Syllabus : EP  department at IIT-M is collaborated with electrical department .(here electrical may misguide you as electrical is electronics + electrical at IIT-M ) .You are introduced to physics courses like Quantum Mechanics , electrodynamics , solid state physics , statistical physics ,etc . Maths is the language of physics so in each semester you have courses from maths and some electrical department courses .and also EP lab etc. Here are the syllabus of EP at IIT-M ,IIT-B,IIT-D,IIT-Guwahati .
You can also have a look at what wiki says about Engineering Physics

Placement and future opportunities :
1. EP is research oriented branch so after four years you can go for research and development in physics. You also have option of going for higher studies in physics or EP or elec (If you take much elective courses )
2. Due to electrical background you can also seat for elec companies interview .
3. And like most of IITians (who do job) you can always go for non-core jobs like coding , analytics ,etc.
4. Here is the placement report of EP at IIT-M

Who should join :
1. If you are interested in elec and physics then this branch is definitely for you (at IIT-M and IIT-B )
2. If you love physics and engineering then yeah you are at right place. Here I would like to tell you that physics what you have studied in JEE is much different than what you are going to do in EP/PH . JEE physics is problem solving oriented but this is conceptual base (although you have much more maths than JEE ). If you like problem solving only (not concepts ) then maybe this branch is not good for you ,I would recommend you for mech (If you love thermodynamics and mechanics , fluid problems and numbers evolve in it) . At this stage it is very hard to decide about what you love so I would recommend you to go through some lectures of NPTEL
3. If Some how you are not getting electrical at IIT-M but you love electrical , and you would like to change your branch in future , so just for safe side (In case you failed to do branch change) join EP .

If you have any doubts regarding branch or IIT-M comment below .
Best Of Luck
Cheers

  1. I might get EP at Roorkee and Guwahati. Can you give an idea about the faculty and the research facilities at the two?

    1. Hi, I'm a student at IIT Guwahati and I'll be as honest in this comment as I can. The faculty here is good but you should not expect them to be as good as they as were at your coaching institute in terms of teaching. In terms of knowledge, they are the best and there's a lot you can learn from them. So just attending the classes won't be enough, self study matters.
The research facility here is also good and just recently, a new Central Instrumentation Facility (CIF) has opened with various advanced instruments.

    2. I'm studying EP at IITR and as Sujay mentioned above, the faculty at any IIT won't all be amazing. While all will have good credentials and knowledge. You won't find all of them to be good at teaching. We have good facilities in the Physics department and many professors have their own labs here along with labs in the Centres of excellence like the Nanotechnology centre.

  2. I might get EP at IIT Delhi or madras. Could you please suggest me which one is better in terms of teaching and research infrastructure. My field of interest is quantum physics but I like physics as whole.

    1. IIT-D EP is more inclined towards photonics and IIT-M EP is (PH+elec) . In both insti you will be able to learn QM . I think IIT-M physics department is better than IIT-D . We(IIT-M) had prof.V. Balakrishnan who is one of the best theoretical physicist in India (google it if you don't know who is he) ,So physics department is good .
Teaching wise - Both the institute have experience faculty .
If you ask my opinion I would prefer IIT-M because of slightly better (than IIT-D)physics department , elec , environment wise (Delhi's temperature) , near from my home (Maharashtra )
      best of luck
      cheers

    1. Yes , it is totally possible , and many have done it before , but remind you that you will need to study in your first sem .

  7. Hi Yash,
Dude, on an average how many students change their branch to EP and how many change their branch from EP to something else?(atleast tell me of your batch)
What is the cutoff CGPA to get into EP through branch change?(the more accurate the better)
How hard is it to get a 9+ CGPA in first semester ?
And ya, I am talking about IIT Madras..

    Thank You

  8. I'm actually much interested to get into physics department in
iit-m,so what should be my Mark in jee advance to get into engineering physics (I'm belonging to OBC-NCL)

    1. No one can be sure about marks. It will depend on difficulty of exam.
But rank of around 1200(obc) should do for IITM EP

IITs and IISERs

Let me introduce myself, I am Yash Bhusare. Currently I am perceiving four years program (2016-2020) of Engineering Physics at IIT Madras. Recently I came across many students going through a dilemma, which is better, IIT’s or IISER. There are many myths about IITs and IISER, some consider that IITs outclass IISER which is not the case (even true in some aspects). Here in this blog I would like to put-up the true scenario. This blog mostly takes into account the students who are confused whether to opt for EP/BS/MS courses from IITs and BS/MS courses from IISER.    Both these institutes come from a very different background and thus there is no point in comparing the two. One comes from research background while the other brings technical education and a quite popular image with it.    On a first note I would suggest that if you are getting IISc and you are keen in Research and higher studies, then without a second thought you should go for it. About IIT Madras

IIT-Madras     Hello, everyone, I am Yash Bhusare, student of IIT-Madras. I am starting a new series of blogs where you can find photos and information of some of the IITs. Information like Hostel, Mess, classrooms, etc Classrooms -  In your first year, you will have to share classrooms with a different branch because the first-year syllabus is almost same for the whole institute. First year’s typical room will look like this.                                                                                                            Hostel - In your first year, you will need to share your room with someone. Don't get scared of him/her (My roommate is one of my best friend). I wil...
